Research shows that simply practicing gratitude daily can improve our mental and physical health. Gratitude brings more happiness and satisfaction to our lives. And for this, I have put together 9 gratitude exercises that you can follow in your life and bring more thankfulness and appreciation in life.
Before we get into the list of gratitude exercises,
What is Gratitude?
Gratitude is an act to notice and appreciate the things that we often take for granted. It can be necessities like food, water, having a shelter, or friends and families. It is about taking a moment to reflect on good things around us, whether it is big or small.
According to the Oxford Dictionary, Gratitude means The quality of being thankful; readiness to show appreciation for and to return kindness.
Why is it so Important to show gratitude?
Gratitude is related to our well-being. Practicing gratitude helps us to acknowledge the goodness in our lives.
Studies show that It also helps to become more optimistic, brings more happiness, reduces anxiety and depression, improves self-esteem, and much more!
Why do I give this much importance to gratitude?
Being in a negative and judgy society, itβs difficult to always feel grateful. Our negative mindsets and negative thoughts always force us to focus on negative things more.
Practicing gratitude daily helped me to find more positive aspects of my life. It has affected my overall well-being. It has helped me to gain satisfaction when it was needed the most. And so here I am sharing nine simple and practical gratitude exercises that helped me to boost my gratitude with you to inspire you to feel more positive emotions and good experiences.
9 Gratitude exercises to transform your life!
#1. Gratitude journaling
Gratitude journaling is the easiest type of exercise one can follow. In this journal, you can write about what you are grateful for in your life. You can maintain a daily or weekly gratitude journal whatever you prefer. You should journal when you feel comfortable and you wanna reflect on good things. Journaling is a habit that should not be forced on you.
One thing I want to suggest is to be specific whenever you write something. So instead of writing, I am grateful for my friend, write more specifically why you are grateful for them, Because of their personality or experiences you had with them. You can also use gratitude prompts to start with.
#2. Taking a gratitude week challenge
This challenge is a fun one to do because this helps you to become more positive and have awareness of good things and the people around you. In this gratitude exercise, you have to challenge yourself to express your gratitude more. You have to say thanks to the people about whom you feel you are grateful for and give them the reason too.
This exercise radiates positive vibes because you will find about how many people you are grateful for around you each day (and this number can be beyond your expectation) and when you genuinely say something good to others they feel good and valued. Do try this challenge once to get a wonderful experience!
#3. Gratitude letter
This can be helpful to you if you can’t directly express your gratitude to others. Write a letter to someone you are grateful for. Spend some minutes thinking about a person for whom you feel thankful, reflect on how they have made a difference in your life or what experience made you feel like, and then express your thoughts in words in a gratitude letter. Give the letter to that special person.

#4. Saying positive affirmations
Affirmations are positive statements that help you gain a more positive outlook for your life and eliminate negative thoughts which hold you back! When you repeatedly say affirmations about positive things you attract more positivity in your life. Make this habit to repeat some affirmations aloud to get more benefits from it. Some affirmations you can use for expressing gratitude like,
- I am blessed.
- I am grateful.
- I appreciate my Life.
- I am enough.

#5. Write gratitude notes
This gratitude exercise is very simple and you can follow this in your daily life. Every day you have to think about 3 things about which you are grateful for and write them on a piece of paper. This could be anything like visiting your favorite place or having your favorite meal, watching an amazing movie, anything that made you feel good, or about any special person, mention it. Now you can keep a box or jar to collect your everyday notes.
And from then on, in a short period, you have a jar or a box full of reasons you are grateful for and that brings you happiness. Whenever you feel low at any point in your life, take out a few notes to read and reflect on how much good you have in your life π
#6. Spend some time outside
In our busy lives, we are packed in our schedules and we donβt often realize how much it becomes necessary to go outside and observe nature around us. Take a few minutes in a week to go for a walk outside and acknowledge more good things around you. You may pass from a particular street daily but didnβt notice anything but if you go outside intending to find positivity you may observe changes.
For instance, you can acknowledge beautiful flowers, the warmth of the sunny day, the beautiful sky, the cool breeze. Enjoy the wonders of the world.
#7. Meditating
Try to spend some time in silence and listen to your thoughts. This especially works best for me. Every morning I spend some time sitting in silence and paying attention to my thoughts.
You can try to do the same and reflect on your thoughts. You will start to get more clarity of your thoughts and a better understanding of your mind.
#8. Donating something
Donate something If you can to someone or do a charity if you prefer that. This exercise will help you to understand that you are capable of bringing some changes in the lives of others. You will become more grateful for having the ability to do something for others and you will experience more pleasure.
#9. A complaint-free day
You should take a complaint-free day challenge to stop focussing on negative thoughts and complaining when something unexpected happens. I know itβs not as easy to avoid complaining as to say it. But you can commit yourself to notice how many times you focus on negative things instead of solving them. Focus on how you can turn things around and eliminate negativity. This takes time but you will get there!
I understand that life is not always smooth and there are difficult times and challenges so sometimes itβs hard to show gratitude but at that moment also when you take out some time and practice gratitude exercises even a small one It will help you to shift your energy on positivity. And remember there is always something to be grateful for.
